  • Kohlschreiber ends Baker's Wimbledon run

    7/3/12 11:13 PM | Ricky Dimon
Philipp Kohlschreiber stops Brian Baker in the Wimbledon fourth round on Tuesday. Next up for Kohlschreiber is a quarterfinal clash against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Philipp Kohlschreiber continues to take advantage in a section of the Wimbledon draw vacated by Rafael Nadal. Kohlschreiber defeated Brian Baker 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-3 to book a quarterfinal spot on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

The German has been in stellar form this summer, capturing a title in Munich and knocking out Nadal on the grass courts of Halle before making his way to the All-England Club. He was up to more of the same in this one, striking 23 aces in just three sets, converting all three of his break points, and holding serve every single time. Kohlschreiber needed only one hour and 55 minutes to advance and set up a meeting with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Baker, who is likely on track for Comeback Player of the Year honors, did well to reach the fourth round but he never got on track in this one. The 27-year-old American was frustrated with the wet conditions early and he managed only a single game in the first set.

A more competitive second set saw Baker raise his level. The wild cared fired 18 winners after hitting just three in the opener and he held his serve the whole way to force a tiebreaker. Kohlschreiber took it seven points to four to grab a stranglehold and the match and he used one break to win the third.

"I'm very, very happy," said Kohlschreiber. "It's very tough to describe the real feelings. I'm very happy how I played. Also, lucky, at the end, with the weather, that I could finish my match. It's just an amazing feeling. For sure I will celebrate. I have a lot of confidence now."
