  • Baker, Paire stay hot at Wimbledon

    6/28/12 6:02 PM | Ricky Dimon
Brian Baker and Benoit Paire cruise into the third round at the All-England Club on Thursday. Baker destroys Jarkko Niemonen and Paire ousts Alexandr Dolgopolov.

    Brian Baker d. Jarkko Nieminen 6-0, 6-2, 6-4

Comeback kid Brian Baker turned in another near-flawless ball-striking performance as he destroyed Nieminen in just one hour and 20 minutes during second-round action on Thursday at Wimbledon. Baker, who finished runner-up in Nice and is on the verge of storming into the Top 100, fired 34 winners compared to only eight unforced errors. The 27-year-old American cracked six aces and did not face a single break point.

Nieminen had taken out a rusty Feliciano Lopez in his opener, but he had nothing to offer against Baker. The veteran Finn did not find the scoreboard once in the first set and from there it got marginally better. As expected, Nieminen's second-serve was an extreme liability and he won a mere 29 percent of those points. Baker will go up against Benoit Paire in the third round on Saturday.

    Benoit Paire vs. (22) Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4

Another hot streak continued with Paire dismissing Dolgopolov in straight sets later in the day. Paire, a 's-Hertongenbosch semifinalist last week, got the best of a clean match and his solid grass-court game was simply too good for Dolgopolov. The Frenchman struck 47 winners and 23 unforced errors and got the job done in one hour and 55 minutes.

Both players broke serve once in the opening set and Paire dominated the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to two. From there it was mostly all Paire, who did not face a single break point in the second. His fourth break of the day came at 4-4 in the third and he finished off the proceedings comfortably one game later.
