  • Roddick, Ferrer, Berdych move safely into round three

    Andy Roddick joins fellow tournament seeds David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych in the third round of competition at the Wimbledon Championships. The players advance after winning their second-round matches on Thursday.

    (6) Andy Roddick def. Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2

    Two-time Wimbledon runner-up and sixth seed Andy Roddick is through to the third round of the Championships, following his second-round dismissal of Igor Kunitsyn Thursday afternoon. The American overcame a fourth-set lapse to notch a win over the Russian, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 after two hour and 6 minutes of play. Roddick looked very solid at the beginning, winning the opening set and building a double-break, 4-0 lead in the second.

    The 26-year-old faltered a bit on the forehand wing in third, dropping the 38-minute set 3-6. Roddick regrouped to take a 3-0 advantage in the fourth set, holding his service games without facing a break point. The American completed the day with 18 aces and 17 winners. Roddick captures his 100th victory in a Grand Slam event, joining active players Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt.

    Roddick moves on to face Jurgen Melzer in the third round. The Austrian knocked out last week’s Ordina Open winner Benjamin Becker in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, 7-6.

    (16) David Ferrer def. Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2, 6-3

    David Ferrer advanced to the third round on Thursday, defeating Fabio Fognini in three easy sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. The Spaniard cruised to a 100-minute win over an erratic Italian, who shanked seven double faults and 45 unforced errors on the afternoon. The 16th seed, who led 3-0 in the opening set and 4-1 in the second, converted eight of 17 break point opportunities.

    Ferrer will take on the winner of the second-round battle between 23rd-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek and Potito Starace of Italy.

    (20) Tomas Berdych def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-4, 6-4

    Tomas Berdych eased into the third round of the Championships, knocking out Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets early Thursday. The 23-year-old Czech turned in a very strong performance on serve during the match, facing just one break point in a little under two hours of play. With the victory, Berdych, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2007, makes his fifth consecutive appearance in the third round. The 20th-seed finished the afternoon with 29 winners and 15 aces, while securing four breaks of serve.

    Berdych will meet 12th seed Nikolay Davydenko in the third round. The Russian took out Victor Crivoi of Romania in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

There is a great article in the USA TODAY about Roddick and his coach and how he feels very confident at Wimby. The hunger is there, that's for sure! Seems everyone has the hunger for it and everyone will be playing lights out so no one is safe! But it was really nice to hear the passion Andy still has for the game he has played for so long!
