Mario Ancic advances to the Wimbledon second round as Michael Llodra calls it quits early in the third set. It's a disappointing end to an otherwise stellar match.
Mario Ancic led Michael Llodra 6-4, 7-6(7), 2-0 in their first-round clash when the No. 32 retired with a hip injury. Next up for Ancic is German qualifier Philipp Petzschner.
Ancic really did not need any help from Llodra to advance because the 6'5'' Croat played near-flawless tennis throughout the proceedings, which lasted less than an hour and a half. Llodra saw the unseeded Ancic fire 17 aces while committing a mere five unforced errors.
Both men played outstanding grass-court tennis; the difference was simply that Ancic served bigger and better. He won 91 percent of his first-serve points and lost a total of just 10 service points in the entire match. Ancic's lone break of serve in set one was enough to take it 6-4 and after a grueling second frame of play that did not feature a single break point, Ancic's break early in the third drove Llodra into retirement.
The Frenchman's hip clearly began bothering him and he managed to win just one point in the first two games of the final set. That's when Llodra had seen enough of his on-fire opponent.
It will be the first career meeting between Ancic and Petzschner when the two players square off in round two.
