In a match that tilted more than a pendulum, Germany's Phillip Kohlschreiber came out on top.
These two both play a similar style of game. Nice serve, aggressive strokes off both sides, but mentally weak when it comes to the big matches and the big points.
For much of the match, it was one player being aggresive and trying to end the points quickly while the other retrieved. Either a missed shot or a winner would end the point. Both men had over 20 aces as points ended rather fast. Soderling choked quite a few times in this match, including a set point in the first set along with a series of 3rd set tiebreak woes.
In the final set tiebreak, a combination of clutch and tentative play occured. Kohli was up 6-2 in the breaker before losing 4 straight points including a double fault at 6-5. Soderling then had a match point at 7-6 before losing that. Kohlschreiber finally ended the madness by winning 10-8 in the tiebreak.
Kohlschreiber will face not Federer in the next round but Ivo Karlovic.
Mental strength from Kohlschreiber was on display here. He has not lost a match in his career after holding a match point.
Soderling had too many chances to win this thing but just couldn't convert.
