Spanish veteran Carlos Moya posted a big win on Tuesday over Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in two tight sets.
Carlos Moya has been having an off year. Since making the final in Costa Do Sauipe, his only result of note was a quarterfinal appearance in Hamburg, where he was dispatched of easily by Rafael Nadal. Tuesday’s win over Janko Tipsarevic is a good result for the Spaniard. Tipsarevic has a big game and is capable of taking out top players, as he showed at Wimbledon when he bounced Andy Roddick out in the second round of Wimbledon.
Though Moya played well to beat Tipsarevic, the Serb helped him along by keeping his first serve percentage at 44% for the match. Tipsarevic also had an injury scare at the beginning of the first set tiebreaker. Fortunately, he was able to continue. He was broken early in the second set, but managed to break Moya back to level the set. Moya played well to get another break at the end of the set, to close out the match in straights.
Moya will have the difficult task of playing number four seed Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.
