Coming into Cincinnati, Andy Murray has enjoyed some of his best form all year. On Thursday, he battled Russian Dmitry Tursunov for a spot in the quarters.
In the past few weeks, Andy Murray has played probably the second best tennis of anyone on the tour. He secured his first ever win over Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in Toronto and proved again in his match against Dmitry Tursunov that he intends to be a force to be reckoned with in the tennis world.
Murray is best known for his intelligent game. The young Scot has an impressive shot repertoire and he has become increasingly adept at using his variety to his advantage instead of getting bogged down with too many options. Shot indecision has long been cited by critics of Murray’s game, but he seems to have worked that out.
Murray and Tursunov played in the hottest part of the day; Murray used the weather to his advantage by consistently yanking the Russian back and forth at the baseline for the better part of both sets. Tursunov managed to hang with Murray for part of the first set. The Russian broke Murray’s serve once in the first set, but the lead was short-lived. Murray broke back twice, using his slice to great effect. The shot, aimed at the shoelaces of Tursunov did damage all day long.
The second set was all Murray. He played just brilliant tennis as Tursunov began to run out of steam. Murray secured another two breaks in the second to close out the match in
