Rain takes its toll on Washington tournament
8/4/11 3:57 AM | Cheryl Murray
Only a handful of matches got on court at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic due to bad weather on Wednesday.
The big news of the day in Washington was delayed and canceled play as rain swept through the area. American Donald Young managed to take advantage of the breaks in the rain to get almost 3 sets of play. Austria’s Jurgen Melzer eventually retired at the start of the third set with a pulled left thigh.
Young will move into the third round where he will take on countryman Michael Russell, who also moved through due to the retirement of his opponent (Xavier Malisse of Belgium).
Also advancing between the raindrops were No. 9 seed Nikolay Davydenko and Radek Stepanek, who downed recently-reinstated Wayne Odesnik. The American was given a ban after being caught with Human Growth Hormone in customs in Australia.
