Baghdatis and Bellucci do double duty in Washington
8/5/11 4:16 AM | Cheryl Murray
Marcos Baghdatis and Tommy Haas were forced to play twice on Thursday to compensate for a rainy Wednesday in the US capital.
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis started off his Thursday against top Indian Somdev Devvarman. The Indian actually managed to give Baghdatis a bagel in the middle set before Baghdatis got the match back on track in the third. The Cyrpriot put in a 2 hour workout on court against Devvarman before going back out later in the evening to take on Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.
Bellucci also took Baghdatis to 3 sets, though the match was over slightly more quickly than his second round encounter against Devvarman. Bellucci nabbed the first set 6-3, but superior serving from Baghdatis allowed the Cypriot to work his way back into the match to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
The surprise of the tournament so far is Donald Young, who joins Baghdatis in the quarterfinals. The American, who has struggled since moving from juniors to the main tour, took out veteran countryman Michael Russell in the third round to earn his spot.
