Young makes first ATP semi with upset over Baghdatis
8/6/11 2:36 AM | Cheryl Murray
American Donald Young pulled off the surprise of the tournament so far with a straight-set victory over 2010 Washington finalist Marcos Baghdatis.
Donald Young def. Marcos Baghdatis (7) 6-3, 7-6(4)
American Donald Young will have something to celebrate on Friday night. Young defeated Marcos Baghdatis to advance to the semifinals of an ATP event for the first time in his career.
Baghdatis certainly helped the American along on his quest. The Cypriot served at a positively dismal 38% for the match and appeared exhausted from the moment he stepped onto the court. Baghdatis had the disadvantage of playing a pair of 3-set matches on Thursday, having had his match canceled due to rain on Wednesday.
Young was certainly the better player in the first set. Baghdatis was flat-footed and never got a whiff at a service break. The second set was far more entertaining and competitive, and Young showed some signs of nerves. Both men secured a pair of service breaks to force the tiebreake. The American unexpectedly held his nerve better in the important points of the breaker. The American will take on the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek.
Radek Stepanek def. Fernando Verdasco (5) 6-4, 6-4
Despite serving below 50% for the match and kicking in a single ace, Radek Stepanek squeaked out a straight-set victory over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
The match wasn’t particularly pretty from Verdasco’s end of the court. The Spaniard donated far too many wild errors to the Stepanek cause and he generally looked out-of-sorts for the first set. Verdasco started out the second set looking better. He had a 3-0 lead and a trio of break points to take a 4-0 lead. When he failed to do so, his game once again fell apart. Stepanek held Verdasco to just 1 more game, while he took the win in straight sets.
