Blake takes out defending champion Nalbandian
8/3/11 4:12 AM | Cheryl Murray
David Nalbandian will not be repeating as the champ in Washington DC. He was dispatched in surprising straight sets by American James Blake. John Isner joined his countryman in the third round.
James Blake def. David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4
The first set and the beginning of the second was dismal from Argentina’s David Nalbandian. The Argentine veteran served at an embarrassing 31%, which was no match whatsoever for a quality returner like James Blake. The American won half of the return points on Nalbandian’s serve to take a convincing lead.
Nalbandian was broken right away in the second set. He pulled his act together as the set progressed, but Blake held his nerve and the break lead through to a 6-4 scoreline and passage into the third round.
John Isner def. Tobias Kamke 6-1, 6-3
American John Isner had no difficulty dispatching of Tobias Kamke of Germany. The Tuesday night marquee match lasted just an hour and five minutes, with Isner's serving in the spotlight.
Isner only put in 6 aces, but he served well enough that Kamke only managed to win 3 points on the American's first serve. Kamke was broken twice in the opening set. He had a trio of chances to break Isner's serve, but the American held off each of them.
Kamke actually struggled more on serve in the second set, facing down 9 break points. He held off all but 2 of them, but he didn't have a sniff at a break on Isner's serve.
Isner moves into the third round, where he will take on former Davis Cup teammate James Blake.
