  • Blake off to a good start in Washington

    8/2/11 3:19 AM | Cheryl Murray
James Blake delighted the American crowd with a straight-set win over Japan’s Tatsuma Ito.

James Blake def. Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-3

American veteran James Blake didn’t break much of sweat in this first round match. Tatsuma Ito of Japan kept Blake on court under an hour. The American converted on 4 of 5 possible break points, while Ito had the exact opposite result. The Japanese man only secured 1 service break in 6 chances.

This win marks another step forward in the comeback attempt of Blake, who has had many struggles with injury and illness over the course of his career. Blake will take on the No. 8 seed David Nalbandian in the second round.

Radek Stepanek def. Philipp Petzschner 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-0

This match wasn’t as close as the scoreline suggests. The Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek was utterly dominant on serve. He faced 1 break point in the entire 2 hour and 11 minute match. Philipp Petzschner of Germany was fortunate to take this match to 3 sets.

After Stepanek lost the first set in a disappointing tie breaker, the Czech went right back to work. He secured just one break in the second set, but he rolled over Petzschner completely in the third set. The German only won 3 points on serve in the decider and a dismal 11 on his own serve.

Stepanek takes on lucky loser Wayne Odesnik, who snuck into the draw after injured No. 2 seed Mardy Fish withdrew.
