8/8/11 2:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
The Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek captured his first title of 2011 with a straight set victory over Frenchman Gael Monfils.
The result of this match was as much about Monfils losing the match as it was Stepanek winning it. The Frenchman was a shadow of the played he’d been earlier in the week.
Stepanek only served at 38% for the match and kicked just 2 aces. Despite those dismal statistics, Monfils still failed to earn a single break point.
Monfils was slightly better on serve than he was on the return; but on Sunday that was hardly saying much. He was broken once in each set. Stepanek converted on the first break point chance on both occasions.
The two men will now make their way to Montreal for the first Masters event of the summer hardcourt season. Monfils has a bye to the second round; Stepanek will take the court in the first round against Feliciano Lopez.
