Isner, Monfils advance in Washington
8/5/11 4:40 AM | Cheryl Murray
After a tough match against good friend James Blake, American John Isner finds himself in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic quarterfinals.
The rain on Wednesday wreaked havoc on the entire men’s draw. Top seed Gael Monfils joined most of the top seeds in pulling a double in Washington to make sure that the quarterfinals are contested on Friday.
Monfils took out Ryan Sweeting of the United States in his first match on Thursday. The American put up a fight in the second set, but as the more experienced player, he pulled the straight set win out in the breaker.
Next up for Monfils was Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov. The scoreline was similar to his second round match, with the Frenchman taking the first set easily but tested in the second. Tursunov put up a much better fight in the tiebreaker than did Sweeting, but the result was the same; Monfils through in straight sets.
Joining Monfils in the quarters will be American John Isner, who struggled against his good friend James Blake.
Isner, who is known mostly for his massive first serve, played a predictable first set in which he won in a tiebreaker. The shocker was the middle set for the towering American. Blake got off to a quick start with a service break; the shock coming with Isner ceding the set at 6-1.
Blake was knocking at the door to victory, but Isner once again snatched victory in a tiebreaker.
