Donald Young’s dream run in Washington ended on Saturday in straight sets to Czech veteran Radek Stepanek.
After an impressive run to the semifinals in Washington, American Donald Young was brought down to earth by opponent Radek Stepanek.
For all that Young defeated quality opponents in Jurgen Melzer and Marcos Baghdatis, the American crumbled when put under the pressure of Stepanek’s shot variety.
Young appeared unable to execute a game plan against Stepanek. The first set progressed with no chances for the American to break; Stepanek won all but 2 points on his first serve and 4 points on his second serve. Young was broken twice to give Stepanek the lead.
The second set was slightly better for Young; he earned a pair of service breaks, but he was unable to convert. Stepanek only had a single break point chance, but he was more opportunistic than Young and snagged it on the first try.
Stepanek awaits the winner of John Isner and Gael Monfils.
