Darcis takes down Davydenko, Del Potro advances
10/27/11 3:21 AM | Cheryl Murray
No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro had no trouble getting past Germany’s Philipp Petzschner. The Argentine is joined in the second round by Steve Darcis, who dispatched Nikolay Davydenko.
Juan Martin Del Potro (2) def. Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-4
This match was not quite as easy for Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro as the scoreline would suggest. Germany’s Philipp Petzschner generally played well, but Del Potro made the most of the break point opportunities that presented themselves to get a break in each set.
Petzschner had a rough start to the match, getting broken immediately, but he kept things competitive the rest of the time.
Del Potro seems to have shaken off the rust since his second round ouster at the hands of James Blake last week in Stockholm. The Argentine will take on the winner of Tommy Haas and Aljaz Bedene.
Steve Darcis def. Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(2)
This match was topsy-turvy, with Davydenko ahead, then behind, ahead and then behind again. The Russian played well in the first set, but he completely lost the plot in the second. Belgium’s Steve Darcis, who is not known for his blistering return game, dished out an unlikely bagel set to Davydenko in the middle frame.
The Russian was up 4-0 in the third set, but he once again stumbled and allowed Darcis to claw his way back into the match. Davydenko faltered in the tiebreaker to give Darcis the upset win.
