Anderson, Baghdatis advance in Vienna
10/25/11 12:12 AM | Cheryl Murray
On a day filled mostly with qualifying, two main draw matches featuring Kevin Anderson and Marcos Baghdatis were showcased in Vienna on Monday.
Marcos Baghdatis def. Ryan Sweeting 6-4, 6-2
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis kicked off his Erste Bank Open campaign with a win over American Ryan Sweeting. The American was able to keep up with Baghdatis somewhat in the opening set. Sweeting secured a break of the Cypriot’s serve, but surrendered a pair himself to go down 6-4.
The second set was far more dominant from Baghdatis. He faced no break points, while securing another pair from Sweeting. He will take on Kevin Anderson in round 2.
Kevin Anderson def. Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 6-4
As usual it was his serve that got Kevin Anderson through this match. The South African stands at 203 cm (6’8” inches) and has a bomb of a first serve. He smacked 10 aces in the two-set match, but the more important statistic for Anderson was that he went 5 for 5 on break point chances against him.
His opponent Andreas Haider-Maurer was the hometown favorite who served well enough in his own right to rack up 8 aces. But he simply didn’t have quite enough to get past the No. 6 seed. Haider-Maurer was defending points from making the final in Vienna last year.
