Tsonga, Melzer move into Vienna quarters

Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, looking to gain points for the World Tour Final, advanced to the quarterfinals at the Erste Bank Open.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Jarkko Nieminen 3-6, 6-3, 3-1 (ret.)
France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faced an injured Jarkko Nieminen on Finland on Thursday. The good news for Tsonga is that he was up a break in the third set before Nieminen was forced to retire. Unfortunately, the Frenchman also lost the first set playing relatively poorly.
Tsonga is sitting right on the bubble of qualifying for the London year-end event, which features the top 8 players in the world. The Frenchman is currently at No. 8, but he has yet to secure his spot. A win in Vienna and the 250 points that he would earn would help in that regard, but he will have to play better than he did against Nieminen to win.
Jurgen Melzer def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-1
Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez had chances in his second round match against Vienna defending champion Jurgen Melzer. The first set in particular was competitive, with a late break for Melzer giving the Austrian the set lead.
The second set was a disaster for Garcia-Lopez. He had 5 chances to break Melzer’s serve but he didn’t convert any of them. The Austrian meanwhile secured a pair of breaks early to close out the match easily. Melzer will take on the big-serving South African Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals.
