Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko have booked spots opposite each other in the Valencia semifinals on Saturday.
Mikhail Youzhny def. Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-4
Mikhail Youzhny already had a 4-0 head-to-head advantage over Gilles Simon. After Friday’s match, the Russian made it 5-0. This was a strange match, especially in the second set, after the opening set went easily enough for Youzhny. The Russian pounced on Simon’s second serve throughout the set, and as a result he was able to secure the only service break of the set. The drama started in the second set. At 3-2, Simon earned a staggering seven break-point chances – Youzhny saved them all. To add to the tension, a person in the crowd lost consciousness and the match had to be delayed while medical staff attended to the situation.
Simon had another four chances in Youzhny’s next service game, but he was still unable to convert. The 11 missed opportunities took their toll on Simon. The Frenchman lost serve at 4-4, and Youzhny served out the match.
Nikolay Davydenko def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 7-6(3)
Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has had a surprisingly good showing in these last few months of the year. He already has a quarterfinal result from the indoor season in Stockholm. He adds another to his tally in Valencia. No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko proved too strong in the end, but Garcia-Lopez gave the Russian a good test before surrendering.
Davydenko was dominant in the opening set, as the Spaniard did not have have a single chance at a break. Garcia-Lopez came out fighting in the second, however. Each player pocketed a pair of service breaks to force a tiebreaker. In the end it was Davydenko’s superior serving ability that got him the win.
