Sam Querrey takes out a tired-looking Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets on Thursday in Valencia. Querrey is through to the quarterfinals and awaits either Juan Martin Del Potro or Kevin Anderson.
Sam Querrey pulled off the first big upset of the Valencia Open 500, defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(5), 6-2 on Thursday afternoon. Querrey, just now making his way back from injury on the ATP Tour, advanced after a mere one hour and 17 minutes.
Tsonga seemed to be distracted the entire way, having captured the Vienna title just last weekend and with the Paris Masters on the immediate horizon. The eighth-ranked Frenchman still managed to hold his first six service games en route to an opening-set tiebreaker, but that's when his opponent took control. Querrey served out the 'breaker at 6-5 for an early advantage.
From there it was all over for Tsonga, who donated serve at 1-1 in the second. Querrey had to fight off two break points in the following game but after that it was nothing more than routine. The 6'6'' American added a love break at 4-2 then finished off the proceedings on serve without any trouble, converting his second match point when Tsonga netted a backhand.
"I felt great," said Querrey, who finished with seven aces and three double-faults (the same numbers as Tsonga). "I served really well and hit my forehand great. It's a good start to the tournament and hopefully I can win another round."
Next up for him is either Juan Martin Del Potro or Kevin Anderson.
