Nikolay Davydenko scores a minor upset over Gilles Simon on Monday in Valencia. Davydenko awaits either Nicolas Mahut or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Nikolay Davydenko beat Gilles Simon 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Valencia Open 500 on Monday afternoon. Davydenko converted four of his 11 break chances and prevailed after two hours and 14 minutes of play.
Coming off a disappointing first-round loss to Steve Darcis in Vienna, Davydenko got back on track early and often in this one. The 30-year-old Russian needed just one break to take the opening set because he fought off both of the break points he faced.
After serving out the first set at 5-4, Davydenko seized complete control of the match with an early break in the second. It started to go awry, however, when the world No. 36 double-faulted on break point at 3-2. That finally seemed to inspire Simon, who added another break when it mattered most at 5-4. Davydenko saved one set point at 15-40 but missed an easy backhand one point later to lose the set.
Simon, though, could not sustain his momentum. The 12th-ranked Frenchman saved two break points to hold for 1-0, but he donated his next service game to fall into another hole. Davydenko survived two break points at 3-2 with impressive baseline play and one more hold was enough because he broke again at 5-3 to clinch victory.
Davydenko won a mere 29 percent of his second-serve points over the course of the match, but he overcame it by putting in 76 percent of his first serves. Next up for him is either Nicolas Mahut or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Yes good win for Davy. Poor guy he needs this win after losing first round in his previous tournament. Hope he can go far here.
