Marin Cilic defeats Milos Raonic in straight sets on Wednesday in Valencia. Cilic is playing just three days after winning the St. Petersburg title.
Marin Cilic maintained his fine form by defeating Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Valencia Open 500 on Wednesday afternoon. Cilic, the Beijing runner-up and St. Petersburg champion, served poorly but dominated from the baseline to prevail after one hour and 31 minutes.
The 6'6'' Croat took control right from the start, breaking in the first game of the match. He saved the only break point he faced in the opening set with a big second serve at 2-1 and cruised the rest of the way. In fact, Cilic dropped only six total points in five service games despite the relative struggle in the fourth game.
Set two progressed in similar fashion, with Raonic donating serve immediately. The 20-year-old Canadian again had one chance to get back on serve, and this time it came with Cilic serving for the match. Raonic led 0-30, then saved one match point before getting a look at a break opportunity. The world No. 27 netted a backhand and Cilic wrapped up the proceedings two points later.
Cilic served at a woeful 43 percent, but he fired six aces and won 79 percent of his first-serve points. Next up for the world No. 20 is Marcel Granollers, a straight-set winner over Alexandr Dolgopolov on Tuesday.
