Juan Monaco rolls over Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets on Friday in Valencia. Monaco sets up a semifinal clash against top-seeded David Ferrer.
Juan Monaco may be at his best on clay, but there is something about the fall swing that always seems to get him back on track.
Monaco reached the Shanghai Masters semifinals last year then upset Andy Murray to reach the quarters at the Valencia Open 500. The Argentine has made it one step further in Valencia this time, as he took out Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3 on Friday night to book a semifinal spot.
Ferrero was making a quick turnaround after a long three-setter on Thursday against Alex Bogomolov. The Spaniard held his first three service attempts in this one but started to lose the plot when he got broken at 3-4 in the opening set. Monaco almost gave it right back, but he survived a tough game to hold and finish things off.
From there it was all over for Ferrero, who saw two break chances in the first but earned none in the second. Two breaks were more than enough for Monaco in set two because he dropped a mere eight points in four service games while serving at 77 percent and winning 16 of 20 first-serve points. The world No. 41's third break of the day at 5-3 wrapped up the proceedings in style.
Monaco served at 71 percent for the match while recording three aces and three double-faults. He will go up against another Spaniard, No. 1 seed David Ferrer, for a spot in Sunday's final.
