  • Monfils, Monaco advance to Valencia second round

    11/2/11 2:41 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gael Monfils makes quick work of Albert Montanes on Tuesday in Valencia. Monfils is joined in the second round by Juan Monaco, a three-set winner over Nicolas Almagro.

    (3) Gael Monfils d. Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-1

Monfils maintained his fine form and sprinted past Montanes in round one of the Valencia Open 500 on Wednesday night. The 10th-ranked Frenchman, who is coming off a title in Stockholm, needed just one hour to advance.

Montanes was competitive in the opening set, which only came down to break-point conversions. Monfils capitalized on one of his four chances and saved the only break point he faced. In set two, though, the underdog Spaniard had no chance. Monfils dropped only one point in three service games to race away with victory. Next up for the No. 3 seed is Pablo Andujar.

    (WC) Juan Monaco d. (4) Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

Monaco outlasted Almagro in two hours and 24 minutes to reach the second round on Tuesday in Valencia. Break-point conversions were the story of this one; Monaco capitalized on three of 12 chances while Almagro converted two of 11. The 41st-ranked Argentine needed just one break before serving out the first set at 5-4.

Almagro battled back from a set and a break down to almost take the match. The 11th-ranked Spaniard closed out the second on serve at 5-3 and was on serve throughout the opening nine games of the decisive third. At 4-5, however, Almagro cracked one last time and Monaco broke for victory. Monaco will go up against Fabio Fognini for a spot in the quarterfinals.
