Juan Martin Del Potro maintains his fine form with a straight-set win over Sam Querrey on Friday in Valencia. Del Potro will face Marcel Granollers in the semifinals.
Juan Martin Del Potro beat Sam Querrey 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Valencia Open 500 on Friday afternoon. Del Potro turned in a dominant performance and dropped a mere eight points in 10 service games to advance in one hour and 17 minutes.
The Argentine took control right away, racing to a 4-0 advantage in the first set. Querrey managed to battle through tough service games in his next two efforts, but he never came close to getting any of the breaks back. A routine hold for Del Potro at 5-2 wrapped up the opening frame of play.
Querrey managed to make things more competitive in the second. The 6'6'' American held five straight times, including a ninth game in which he fought off two break points. At 5-5, though, Del Potro caught fire with his forehand and seized his third break of the day. The world No. 14 quickly served it out at love, punctuating the match with his seventh ace.
Del Potro won 27 of 31 points as he set up a semifinal showdown against unseeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers. Querrey, who had not won an ATP match since Queen's Club prior to Valencia, finished a strong week with four aces and one double-fault.
