Juan Martin Del Potro crushes Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets on Wednesday in Valencia. Del Potro is through to a second-round meeting with Kevin Anderson.
The race for the eight automatic spots in the World Tour Finals is all but over, but a battle for the first alternate spot is on and it could be important with a few of the top eight enduring physical problems. With Nicolas Almagro, Gilles Simon, and Janko Tipsarevic out after one match in their respective tournaments this week, the door is open for Juan Martin Del Potro.
Del Potro made no mistake on Wednesday during first-round action at the Valencia Open 500, destroying Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-1. The Argentine blasted 10 aces without double-faulting and advanced after just one hour and 15 minutes.
Tursunov at least made it competitive in the opening set, but Del Potro needed only one break because he dropped a mere six points in five service games. The world No. 14, who is 11th in the 2011 race, closed out the set with his eighth ace of the afternoon.
With momentum in hand, Del Potro raced away from his opponent throughout the second. Tursunov donated serve immediately and never came close to recovering. The 39th-ranked Russian held only once and gave away the match after one last break at 5-1.
Tursunov finished with three aces and three double-faults while putting in just 43 percent of his first serves. Del Potro, meanwhile, moves on to face Kevin Anderson on Thursday.
