Ferrero, Granollers score three-set wins in Valencia

Juan Carlos Ferrero outlasts Alex Bogomolov in three sets on Thursday in Valencia. Marcel Granollers overcomes Marin Cilic to join Ferrero in the quarterfinals.

Ferrero survived a wild, back-and-forth encounter with Bogomolov to prevail after two hours and 51 minutes of play on Thursday evening at the Valencia Open 500. The 31-year-old Spaniard could have made it much easier on himself, but he struggled on serve the entire way. Ferrero served for the first set on three separate occasions only to get broken at 5-2, 5-4, and 6-5. He managed to regain control in the tiebreaker an took it seven points to three.
Bogomolov fought back in the second, saving eight of nine break points. The American used two more breaks of his own to force decisive third set. Ferrero opened the third with a hold and quickly raced to a 4-0 advantage. Yet again, however, the crowd favorite buckled under the pressure of serving for it at 5-1. Finally, Ferrero finished off the proceedings in appropriate fashion--with a break at 5-2. Next up for Ferrero is an all-unseeded quarterfinal against Juan Monaco.
Marcel Granollers d. Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
Including qualifying matches, Granollers is 13-3 lifetime in Valencia, including a runner-up finish last season. The hot streak continued on Thursday afternoon when he came back from a set down to defeat Cilic in two hours and 13 minutes. Granollers struck 10 aces without double-faulting and is back in the quarterfinals for the third time in his career, ready to face No. 3 seed Gael Monfils.
After dropping the first set, the 34th-ranked Spaniard broke early in the second and saved the only break point he faced to make it stand up. Cilic also donated serve early in set three, but this time he broke to get back on track. At 5-5, however, the 20th-ranked Croat double-faulted on break point to fall into another hole. Granollers trailed 15-40 while serving for the match but won four straight points to clinch victory.
