  • Cilic gets revenge on Dolgopolov, Granollers downs Verdasco

    7/15/12 5:57 AM | Cheryl Murray
It will not be No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Umag. Second seed Marin Cilic lived up to his end of the bargain, but top seed Fernando Verdasco didn’t make the cut.

    Marin Cilic (2) def. Alexandr Dolgopolov (3) 7-5, 6-2

Despite a markedly low first serve percentage (44% for the match), hometown hero Marin Cilic defeated the Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets.

Dolgopolov actually had the advantage first in the opening set, serving for the set. Out of nowhere, the Ukrainian donated an abysmal service game, complete with a pair of double faults. Cilic was able to break back, which he followed with a hold and another service break to yank the set out from underneath Dolgopolov.

After the missed chances of the opener, the Ukrainian’s game fell apart. Cilic was able to draw Dolgopolov into errors, and he took the second set easily 6-2.

    Marcel Granollers (4) def. Fernando Verdasco (1) 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1

Except for the middle set, top seed Fernando Verdasco was soundly out-played in this semifinal match by countryman Marcel Granollers.

This match wasn’t even as close as the scoreline suggests. Verdasco spent most of the match in trouble on his serve. The world No. 16 faced down a whopping 15 break points, of which he saved 9.

Granollers might have won the match even more easily except that he allowed Verdasco to secure service break both times he earned break points, one of which came in the second set which Granollers eventually lost in the tiebreaker.

Granollers and Cilic will battle it out on Sunday evening in Umag for the title.
