Gulbis advances, Ferrero goes down in Umag
7/11/12 12:49 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ernests Gulbis made quick work of opponent Gorka Fraile in his opener at Umag, while Juan Carlos Ferrero’s woes continued with another first-round loss.
Ernests Gulbis def. Gorka Fraile 6-1, 6-3
Ernests Gulbis started his Umag bid in winning fashion with a convincing straight-set win over Spaniard Gorka Fraile, a qualifier ranked 930th in the world.
The Latvian, who has historically had difficulty with consistency, put in a solid effort. Gulbis struck 14 aces, five double faults and only faced two break points, both in the second set. The win sends the world No. 78 into the second round, where he will take on the top seed Fernando Verdasco.
Mate Pavic def. Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-2
In a dismal effort, Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero went down feebly to Mate Pavic, a Croat ranked 547th in the world. The loss gives the Spaniard a 5-11 record on the season and his second straight first-round loss.
The setback also means a steep ranking drop for Ferrero, who won the clay-court event in Stuttgart this same week last year.
This win marks Pavic’s second for the year. The other came in s’Hertogenbosch. Pavic will play Andrey Kuznetsoz in the second round.
