  • Cilic makes quick work of Granollers in Umag final

    7/16/12 12:52 AM | Cheryl Murray
Home crowd favorite Marin Cilic breezed through the Umag final to clinch his second title of the year, 6-2, 6-4 over Marcel Granollers.

Last year in Umag, Croatia's Marin Cilic came up one win short of securing the title of his home tournament. The Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov took the crown in 2011. But Cilic defeated Dolgopolov in the semis, clearing his way to victory on Sunday.

Marcel Granollers, the Spanish clay-courter ranked 24th in the world, had been struggling all year, with his best results of the season so far coming this week. He had a good win in particular against countryman Fernando Verdasco in the semifinals. But he was simply no match for Cilic on Sunday.

Granollers had particular trouble holding onto his serve in the match. The Spaniard was broken more often than he held, with Cilic winning five of his nine service games. Even Cilic was not immune to getting broken, as Granollers managed to snag a break of serve in both sets.

With no rest for the weary, Cilic is scheduled up in Hamburg next week at the bet-at-home Open.

Congrats Marin, well done! Seventh or eighth title now? Hamburg may be a bit more difficult to win but hope he goes far in the tournament. Looking forward to his return to top ten come next year.

Congrats to Cilic on adding another title.

We complain about the female players screeching/screaming, but I think Granollers has got to be right up there with some of the women when it comes to grunting. His is even louder and absolutely weird. At times, i had to mute the TV.
