Juan Carlos Ferrero advances through his Umag opener on Tuesday when Maximo Gonzalez retires in the third set. Tommy Robredo joins Ferrero in round two by defeating Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
Juan Carlos Ferrero d. Maximo Gonzalez 3-6, 6-3, 1-1, retired
Ferrero advanced to the second round of the Studena Croatia Open on Monday when Gonzalez retired early in the third set due to a back injury. For a while, however, it looked like Gonzalez would pull off a minor upset. The 97th-ranked Argentine needed just one break in the opening set because he saved all five of the break points he faced before serving it out at 5-3. Gonzalez even raced to a 2-0 advantage in the second, but that is when the tide turned.
Ferrero got the break back early in set two and managed to keep his opponent on the court long enough for health to become a factor. Gonzalez, who has missed much of the past two seasons due to injury, took a medical timeout late in the second for his back problem. With a break in hand, Ferrero finished things off on serve at 5-3. After two games in the third and trailing 15-40 at 1-1, Gonzalez called it quits. Next up for the 31-year-old Spaniard is No. 3 seed Ivan Ljubicic.
(5) Tommy Robredo d. (Q) Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-3, 6-2
Robredo did not face a single break point and rolled over Ramirez Hidalgo in just one hour and 19 minutes to book his spot in the Umag second round on Tuesday. The 36th-ranked Spaniard dropped 12 service points in the opening set, but he still held serve from start to finish and broke once before closing it out at 5-3.
Set two progressed in even easier fashion for Robredo, who pounded his opponent's second serve and broke twice thanks to his aggressive return tactics. The No. 5 seed had no trouble with his own service games and he served out the proceedings in routine fashion at 5-2. Robredo will go up against Carlos Berlocq for a spot in the quarterfinals.
