Alexandr Dolgopolov won his first ever ATP title with a three set fight over Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
While not exactly an upset, Alexandr Dolgopolov certainly disappointed a stadium full of Croat fans with his defeat of Marin Cilic.
Neither man served particularly well in the match. Both players had first serve percentages in the forties, with Dolgopolov serving at an anemic 43% for the match. It wouldn’t matter in the end though. Dolgopolov won this match with his superior ground strokes.
Cilic got off to the worst possible start. Dolgopolov broke immediately to take a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Croat, he never got a chance to get the break back and the Ukrainian secured the first set 6-4.
The second set was constructed well by Cilic. He shored up some of the shaky serves that cost him in the first set and converted a break point in the crucial 8th game of the set for a chance to serve it out at 5-3 and level the match at a set all.
Cilic repeated his start from the first set. Dolgopolov got an immediate service break for a 2-0 lead, only to hand it back to Cilic at 3-2. Despite leveling the match, the Croat’s game started to fall off noticeably. Dolgopolov broke again in the 8th game and served it out for the title.
