Cilic, Dolgopolov victorious in Umag semis

Croat Marin Cilic and the Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov sparkled in Saturday’s semifinals of the Croatia Open.
Marin Cilic (4) def. Fabio Fognini (6) 6-2, 6-2
It was a short day at the office for Croatia’s Marin Cilic. The crowd favorite spent just an hour and 13 minutes on court dispatching Italian clay courter Fabio Fognini. The Italian had all kinds of difficulty on his serve on Saturday. Cilic earned 8 break points, impressively converting 5 of them, before putting Fognini out of his misery.
The Italian was never in control of the match, a fact that suited the Croat crowd fine. Cilic finished the match with just 2 aces on the day, but in the end, it made no difference.
Alexandr Dolgopolov (2) def. Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-4
Popular Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero came from out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago to win the event in Stuttgart. He was close to reaching a second final for the season, but he simply did not have enough to get past Ukrainian young gun Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Ferrero did not play a terrible match; he lost because of Dolgopolov’s form. The No. 2 seed threw everything in his arsenal at Ferrero, including some truly impressive passing shots. The Spaniard’s serve was simply not enough to throw Dolgopolov off at all. The Ukrainian had 10 opportunities to break, converting on 3, which was more than enough to get the straight-set victory.
