Juan Carlos Ferrero comes back from a set down to beat Ivan Ljubicic on Wednesday in Umag. Ferrero is through to a quarterfinal clash against Carlos Berlocq.
Croatian seeds are 0-2 at one of their home events as both Ivan Dodig and Ivan Ljubicic have crashed out of the Studena Croatia Open. After Dodig fell to Albert Ramos on Monday, Ljubicic dropped his opener 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Juan Carlos Ferrero on Wednesday afternoon.
For a while, however, it looked like Ljubicic would treat the fans to a big victory. Umag's No. 3 seed seized the first break of the day with a forehand winner on break point at 2-1 in the opening set. That would have been enough because Ljubicic saved all four of the break points he faced, but he added another break at 4-1 before wrapping up the set with a love service hold.
Ferrero reversed the momentum by breaking in the second game of set two only to give it right back for 2-1. The two veterans remained on serve en route to a 4-3 Ferrero lead, at which point the Spaniard broke easily to give himself a chance to serve for the second. He did it without any trouble, converting his first set point at 40-15 when Ljubicic struck an errant forehand return.
That set the stage for a back-and-forth decisive frame of play. Ljubicic seemed to lose his way when he donated a break at 3-3 with a netted forehand. The world No. 32, however, fought back immediately and broke at love for 4-4. Unable to sustain his level, Ljubicic dropped serve for a second straight time when he double-faulted on break point. This time Ferrero made no mistake with the lead in hand, as the 31-year-old served out the proceedings at love.
Ferrero recorded no aces and double-faulted twice but he capitalized on four of 10 break-point opportunities en route to a quarterfinal matchup with Carlos Berlocq. Ljubicic, meanwhile, doomed his chances by serving at a mere 36 percent.
