Albert Ramos takes out Croatia's own Ivan Dodig in the Umag first round on Monday. Ramos advances along with Diego Junqueira, who got past Antonio Veic 6-4, 7-5.
Albert Ramos pulled off the first upset of the Studena Croatia Open, ousting No. 8 seed Ivan Dodig 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Monday night. Ramos won an impressive 68 percent of his second-serve return points and advanced to round two after two hours and 36 minutes of play.
Two breaks in the opening set allowed Ramos to serve out the proceedings at 5-4. The Spaniard, however, lost his momentum in the second and donated serve for the second time at 3-4. That allowed Dodig to finish off the set on his racket at 5-3 and force a decisive third.
To the chagrin of the Croatian fans, though, Dodig lost his way in set three. The world No. 40 dropped five consecutive games but then held serve and broke to briefly keep his chances alive. Nonetheless, Ramos ended the match in style with his fifth break of the day at 5-2.
Joining Ramos in the second round was Diego Junqueira, who dismissed another Croat--Antonio Veic. Junqueira also won 68 percent of his second-serve points and he capitalized on seven Veic double-faults en route to a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Ramos awaits either Mate Delic or Gianluca Naso, while Junqueira will battle for a quarterfinal spot against either Andreas Seppi or Dusan Lajovic.
