World No. 3 Roger Federer advanced to the round of 16 at the US Open, following his four-set win over 27th seed Marin Cilic. The veteran is through to the fourth round for the 11th consecutive season.
Third seed Roger Federer reached the fourth round by virtue of his 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against fellow seed Marin Cilic. The 30-year-old tallied 31 winners and 6 aces through two hours and 37 minutes.
Federer led 3-1 in the opening set with help from his trademark forehand. Set point came at 5-3 for the Swiss, who closed the set on a forehand winner. After dropping the second set, Federer took two breaks in the third. The Swiss won the third at Cilic missed a service return at 4-5.
Federer broke to 3-1, then 5-2 in the fourth set. The former champion struck a final unreturned serve to secure a spot in the round of 16.
"I'm on track because I'm in the tournament," said Federer. "That's the most important at the end of the day. I seriously don't care how I'm playing. I wish I play my best every single time and feel amazing. That's not reality. That's what the beauty is of this game, trying to find a way to win when you're not feeling great. That's what I was able to do today. As long as I'm in the tournament I know I have a shot, and that's what it's about right now."
Federer will face Juan Monaco in the next round. The Argentine defeated Tommy Haas in round three, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
