  • Federer downs Tsonga to reach semifinal

    9/9/11 5:22 AM | Kelli DeMario
Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer avenged his recent losses to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, having upended the Frenchman late Thursday. The Swiss won their quarterfinal meeting in straight sets.

World No. 3 Roger Federer continued his effort with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory over 11th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The 30-year-old secured six of 13 break points, en route to a quarterfinal win in an hour and 53 minutes.

After losing a 3-1 edge in the first set, Federer regained the break to 5-4. The Swiss earned service breaks at 1-1 and 3-1 in set two. Double set-point came at 5-3 for Federer, who closed on a forehand miss from Tsonga.

A competitive third set contained no service breaks until the eighth game. Tsonga fought off three break points at 3-4, but gifted a double fault on a fourth. A final strong forehand sealed the match for Federer at 5-3.

The World No. 3 ended the night with five aces and 29 winners.

He is scheduled to square off against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic for a place in the final. Djokovic moved into the final four via the retirement of opponent Janko Tipsarevic Thursday afternoon.

Sienna is just irate that she didn't get any of Rafa's clippings so she's now angry with the whole world! Calm down Sienna, try again at the next slam in Melbourne or the one after that in Paris or the one after that...nothing good ever comes easy.

Roger's playing in the match with Tsonga was truly artistic and beautiful. The grace and style and strategy was spellbinding! That is why we here in Colorado USA are so entertained and joyful about his playing! He truly is amazing. I like RAFA, I like Roddick, I like ISNER, have not yet come to liking Djokovic... too much anger in his facial expressions and actions directed against his opponents. No one can match what Roger works so hard to create.... pure beauty of play. And it is nice when he wins too! @lexandria and friends Colorado USA.
