Alexandr Dolgopolov dismisses Ivo Karlovic in four sets on Saturday at the U.S. Open. Dolgopolov is through to the fourth round along with Janko Tipsarevic, who got a retirement from Tomas Berdych.
Alexandr Dolgopolov, who has already made Grand Slam noise this season with a quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open, defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday afternoon. Dolgopolov fired 22 aces and double-faulted just once before advancing in two hours and 41 minutes.
The Ukrainian dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker, but he took care of business the entire rest of the way. Karlovic's serve disappeared in the second and Dolgopolov used a pair of breaks to level the match with ease.
A relatively competitive third set saw Karlovic earn one break, but the 6'10'' Croat gave away his serve on two more occasions. With momentum in hand, Dolgopolov raced to a 5-1 lead in the fourth. The No. 22 seed failed to serve out the proceedings at 5-2, but he closed the door at 5-4 to clinch victory.
Joining Dolgopolov in the fourth round is an in-form Janko Tipsarevic, who got a retirement from Tomas Berdych. Tipsarevic was cruising 6-4, 5-0 when the Czech retired due to a recurring arm injury.
