  • Djokovic saves two match points, through to final

    9/10/11 11:26 PM | Kelli DeMario
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is through to the US Open final, after rallying from a two-set deficit to beat Roger Federer. He will take on either defending champion Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray on Monday.

Top seed Novak Djokovic advanced to his second consecutive US Open final, having rallied to down five-time former champion Roger Federer. The 24-year-old trailed by two sets, but fought back to take the match in five, 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Djokovic completed the effort with two match points saved at 4-5 in the fifth set.

A competitive fifth set contained no service breaks until the eighth game. A loose forehand error from Djokovic gave Federer a critical 5-3 advantage. The Swiss looked to be in control, as he held double match-point at 5-3. The World No. 1 would draw to 5-4, once Federer gifted a double fault.

Djokovic collected two break points at 5-5, then went ahead after striking a forehand winner. Serving for the match at 6-5, he closed as Federer missed a service return.

Djokovic ended the contest with 48 winners and six breaks of serve.

He will face either Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray for the championship title Monday afternoon.

Honestly I don't know how Federer will recover from this loss. It was definitely one of his worst career loses. And he is 30 already... I feel sorry for him.

Emiliano55 , 9/11/11 12:48 AM

According from Fed presser, he will remain good old Fed for a long time... Nothing changed in his statements, attitude and bitterness...

atg , 9/11/11 12:59 AM

Well, Roger's pressers are always the same. "It's all good" he always say... obviously his results never reflects what he say.

You may like it or not, but Federer is the most important man in tennis history. He changed it all. I used to be a fan of him, not anymore, but there's some facts that no one can deny about him.

And certainly, seeing him lose the way he did today hurt me in a way.

Emiliano55 , 9/11/11 1:32 AM

What a beautiful disaster for Roger! Well it was great to see how well he played overall. All credit to Nole. He went for broke on match point down again this year and his gamble paid off. Roger put on a good poker face at the end. Glad he was a good sport at the end.

I hope he will be back and hope the adversity will make him stronger mentally. He's still capable of greatness and he wanted this badly. I hope the hunger stays there because when he wants something he can still play lights out tennis.

numero , 9/11/11 1:35 AM

There are lot of young top 20 players... who would be soooooo happy to have Fed's terrible results from this season.
He is 30. He is still in top... but his legend and aura is gone.
In presser room... he looked really broken... and scavengers...pardon... journalists smelled blood. New situation for him! I think that he was on the edge of tears!
It will be good to see "Myth" of Roger peeled dawn... then we shall maybe be in position to see Roger... human being.

zare , 9/11/11 2:05 AM

Sad loss of Fed , cant come back with that kind of unforced error rate. Maybe the second worst Grand Slam loss after Wimby 2008.

nirv02 , 9/11/11 2:23 AM

Can't believe he lost, again, from 2-0 up. This is like last year all over again, only worse in a way.

xrf , 9/11/11 5:24 AM

ter?ble loss for dear Roger.

He will come back through, the haters will eat trifle over this, especia?ly zare who is idiot anytime of day or night.

Fleur , 9/11/11 5:32 AM

@Fleur
Suck it up, honey bunch!

Sosueme , 9/11/11 5:39 AM

Cheryl... Ricky....Kelly...
This girl really deserve Darwin prize!
There was real normal atmosphere here yesterday ...and then Fleury Kruger is back!!!
...and madness is cruising on TT once again.
Why don't you block this looney, spare her pitiful mind from sinking even deeper and give us possibility to have a normal conversations here.
...
BTW...Fleury... he was DANCING... You see I always keep my word!

zare , 9/11/11 9:05 AM

Oops fleur forgot to mention bedtime partner sienna in the last post. did two of you split? yesterday fleur mentioned that nadal would lose to murray and federer to beat djoker. Both of his predictions were wrong. I pity on you fleur.

fedexal , 9/11/11 9:20 AM

Novak did find time to remember some other things... he is more calm than I would be after such match: http://say.ly/zfbHc7

atg , 9/11/11 9:57 AM

zare, when you see the language and homophobia that is here from you, it is you in the spotlight dear, am sur peple can see that words come out of your mou?th like swear words and you have things against gay people? well, that's an admision and dangerous to dance on that word. no person reject?s your word here about gay people? They suport your fear of gay? people, natasheo and other?s respect you for what you say as they don?t say nothing.

You bought it here. You are not calm champers.

As for the match, well novak was certain to do his dance again, at the end as if wearing a diaper and punching himself in the air, Mr. arr?gant, but to enco?rage the crowd to act in a negative way is not a clear issue for me, not a class act as a no.1, just an arrogant way to inform people of his arrival, it was a gap in roger's game which novak took advant?ge of, getting crowds reaction, this was abnormal and unmanly, unsporty like to do this. Poor novak to be so afraid having no friends or support.

Give Djokovic credit because he fight?s and he?s a good player. But doing something like that?with his ba?ll bounci?ng and faces to the crow?d, if it were Rafa, Rafa would give a huge fist p?mp. But not delay the game like that.?Really?

shock?ing for no.1 to react like this.

Fleur , 9/11/11 10:35 AM

Oh come off it, Fleur. Djokovic IMO was more nice than necessary to the crowd after all the garbage they handed out to him throughout the match cheering his double faults etc.

samprallica , 9/11/11 11:17 AM

Gone...done...dusted... Fleury Kruger just trying to keep her breath!
Gay....Lesbo??? WTF are you talking ?
Take a look back...and find the post where I mention that!!!
You are lost... completely cracked... pure essence of hate and stupidity!
Get lost creep!

zare , 9/11/11 11:25 AM

I think the crowd had a change of heart after Nole's powerful impossible to see forehand at matchpoint.

phoenix , 9/11/11 11:53 AM

I think it wasn't a case of hatred towards Nole, the crowd have an obvious affiliation for Fed with alll his achievements at the US Open. I also believe they really wanted another Nadal/Fed final as they wanted to see Fed take on his nemesis one more time in a slam final that would've proved to be more of a contest than what we'll probably get on Monday.

lebsta2 , 9/11/11 12:19 PM

to be honest, Novak changed their heart.... it was unreal moment that such a return/winner was so coldly accepted... Ovation started when Novak raised his hands literally asking for a support...

Crowd was in some kind of Federalized trans whole match. Unable to distinguish great shots from double faults. I am afraid that final will go the same... as usual real fans are being replaced by trendy crowd which comes to be seen...

That is burden of being from third world country, and fighting legends...

atg , 9/11/11 12:22 PM

Listen, Djoko was hardly ever a crowd favourite........remember in 2008 when he took on the crowd for some reason or the other and they booed him...........NYork has never really liked Novak like the French towards Rafa!!! Novak just has to accept it, and his unwavering attempts to be liked and accepted is what I find quite off-putting about him!!! Granted, he is an excellent tennis player and I think we all appreciate that, but I just cant yet warm up to Novak and quite a number of people feel the same way............toof!!!!!

As for the match on Monday, i am expecting Rafa to win of course but if he loses, I know it will not be bcos of a donation.............like with Fed!

Monalysa , 9/11/11 2:19 PM

And if he loses it will...? ... pls enlighten us Monalysa?
Lot of ppl like him even more after NY and Rodick trashtalk about Novak.
What he should do? Kissing asses to crowd...LOL...
Not to wise but proud and brave... was the comment on eurosport.
Geeeeez... it seems that Nole is really deeeeeep in someone's head!

zare , 9/11/11 3:28 PM

Zare, Novak has a superb record this season and he might well win three GSlams this year.......................why r u stressing?!!!!.....................I would be in ALL smiles if I were you....................just ignore the Nole bashers like me.............but truth be told........i like him not much!

Monalysa , 9/11/11 3:44 PM

I know people everywhere will root for Fed no matter who's on the other side unless its a local, but yesterday was ridiculous - they were going crazy on double faults and routine errors. That Nole was able to win them over is quite an achievement.

samprallica , 9/11/11 4:24 PM

Mona... I am all smile right now.
You have every right to like Nole or not. But NY incident really pissed me of :)
Have good day... and tomorrow ;)

zare , 9/11/11 5:14 PM

?estitka Zare!

Sosueme , 9/11/11 6:24 PM

samprallica...the same happens to rafa at RG...makes me grind my teeth!

vrael , 9/11/11 6:39 PM

Cestitka Zare
Well I am flattered... tnx Sosueme :)

Some of Novak's fans are as obsessed as he is about crowds liking him. Why is it that Novak has this deep-seated yearning to be liked and be the center of attention, is beyond my comprehension. He's like a man possessed and/or self-absorbed, seeking admiration from all and sundry. Some of his fans are just like him, they expect everyone to like him, yet, these same fans hate other players. Don't you guys understand that you get what you give? Life's a vicious circle.

Novak has been at it with the crowds since 2008 (at least that's when I began noticing his antics) or maybe sooner. At the 2008 AO, he was shaking his racket at the crowd, making faces and doing various sorts of histrionics, but the racket shaking was the worst. He's lucky the Aussies are not like NY, or else they would still be booing him at the top of their lungs. In Canada, a few years ago, he was doing the same racket shaking at the crowd. Why can't he just play his match and ignore the crowd. Does Rafa get into it with the French crowd? No.

I'm a New Yorker, but I travel a lot, and was in California during the USO on an assignment, but I would have loved to be there at the USO to get a first hand view of what actually went on. What I saw on replay made me feel embarassed for Novak. He's so desperate to be liked that he'd even raise his arms to get the crowd to acknowledge him on a point. How needy and silly is that?

@zare, were you at the USO to witness first-hand what happenend between Roddick and Djokovic? I don't think so because you've got it all distorted. Roddick did not ridicule Novak in the manner you suggest. It was Barkaan who instigated the whole situation by asking Andy a bunch of silly questions, to which Roddick jokingly made fun of Novak's many contrived illnesses. I believe Robredo initially did the damage, as he was angry due to some of Novak's trainer calls, and Barkaan used Robredo's remarks to get Roddick's reaction. However, it's not like Novak didn't deserve Robredo's criticisms, he should have gotten more. In fact robredo should have won that match, and it's understandable why he was so angry. Also, after Roddick's on-court interview, what did Novak do the next night? He got into it big time by trash-talking Andy when Barkaan asked him a couple of questions, and his remarks earned him the crowd's disappproval, which he's not been able to overcome, regardless of how hard he's been trying to turn things around. He should just keep his mouth shut, play his game, and maybe in time, the crowd will accept him. I don't suppose he knows how transparent his actions are in trying to win over the crowd? And, the more Novak gets into these histrionics, the more he'll be ignored by the crod. The USO crowd is a very sophisticated one, and prefer Federer's type of demeanor to Novak's, here I am, in the face type of antics.

I don't understand why you become offended because some of us don't like Nole's behavior, considering how very critical you are of roger.

BTW, zare, i don't think you're one who should talk about class, coz you like to get real down and dirty with your name calling and other stuff. I don't understand why you feel you have a right to decide who should and shouldn't post on this forum, unless you're a silent partner, of which we're unaware. How could you expect to receive any respect if you are the one who's calling other people nasty names? I'm sorry, but I don't get it. For sure, you're no gentleman, as I was told at a very young age, gentlemen should not be abusive to women, but treat them with respet. it's OK to argue, but do you have to call Sienna and Fleur, jungle woman and stinky? It's pretty low to call someone 'jungle woman' and 'stinky'.It's similar to some who have this image of themselves as being so wonderful, but are pretentious and sneaky.

I'm not trying to win over anyone here, but I don't see samprallica, numero ans some of the other male posters indulging in the name calling as you're doing, and they are guys. But then again, some of the women here like to indulge in the name calling also, however, two wrongs don't make a right. Another example of two wrongs that don't make a right concerns your constant degrading of Roger, yet you become hysterical when anyone mentions Nole in an unfavorable way.

scoretracker , 9/12/11 3:31 AM

De Niro was there as well...

atg , 9/12/11 11:54 AM

atg.... you mean on court before these match points... or in crowd.
Did you saw his face... while he was waiting serve... nodding the head and face like "OK...show me, what can you do?" PRICELESS.
...scoretracker.... I have started to type answer... but... then what's the point?
You ARE like sienna and fleur... just a little bit more sophisticated.
Take look at my posts here...after Nole's victory. Find me a moment of gloating!
Find me a moment... when I raised my finger like Roger on RG!
PATHETIC .

zare , 9/12/11 12:38 PM

@zare, here is link with celebrities caught during finals: http://bit.ly/orP2PO

I am just waiting to find HD clip of 1 saved MP, but with previous point of Federer included. Expression on his face on reaction of crowd when Fed came to MP, and face just before serve says it all. I don't see despair, hopelessness, sorrow... just a cloud above his head "You'll see!".

here is SD version: http://youtu.be/1EGz8AeqAPY

That is why I like players with emotions instead "cool" poker faces....
