Djokovic, Tipsarevic set up all-Serb collision
9/6/11 4:12 PM | Ricky Dimon
The only thing that stands between Novak Djokovic and the U.S. Open semifinals is one of his fellow Serbs. Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic booked their spots in the quarters with victories on Monday.
Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic survived tense moments on Monday to clinch their places in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Monday. Djokovic won an epic tiebreaker against Alexandr Dolgopolov before prevailing 7-6(14), 6-4, 6-2 and Janko Tipsarevic got past Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2.
Relegated to Louis Armstrong Stadium, Djokovic and Dolgopolov did not disappoint the crowd. A 76-minute first set, during which Dolgopolov gave back an early break, culminated in an incredible 30-point tiebreaker. Dolgopolov saved five set points--one with a backhand drop-volley and another with an overhead smash to end a wild rally--and Djokovic fought off four before the world No. 1 finally clinched at 15-14 on a forehand error by his opponent.
With momentum in hand it was smooth sailing for Djokovic the rest of the way. The top-seeded Serb gave back one of two breaks in the second, but he did not face a single break point in the third as he raced to victory.
An all-Serb clash is in the cards, as Tipsarevic got past Ferrero after three hours and 43 minutes of play. Tipsarevic never dropped serve and two breaks of his own--both at 5-5 in sets one and three--were enough for him to pocket two of the first three sets. Both men took injury timeouts at various stages of this match, but it was Ferrero who eventually wore down in the fourth.
Tipsarevic wrapped up his impressive effort with 20 aces and three double-faults while firing 54 winners to 38 unforced errors.
