Juan Carlos Ferrero takes out Gael Monfils in a five-set thriller during U.S. Open action on Thursday. Ferrero awaits fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the third round.
Juan Carlos Ferrero was an uninvited guest at Gael Monfils' birthday party on Thursday.
Ferrero upset Monfils 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 in four hours and 48 minutes to reach the third round of the U.S. Open. Next up for the 31-year-old Spaniard is countryman Marcel Granollers.
This one was a thriller right from the start. A 70-minute first set saw the two competitors exchange one break of serve each en route to a tiebreaker. Monfils kept it close the entire way, but an expensive double-fault allowed Ferrero to close out the set on serve at 6-5.
Set two also seemed headed for a tiebreaker, albeit with multiple breaks of serve. Monfils, though, picked up his aggressive throughout the set and it paid off at 5-5. The Frenchman seized his fifth break of the afternoon then served out the proceedings at 6-5 to even the match.
When Monfils won the third-set tiebreaker seven points to five, this one seemed like it was all over. The heavily-favored world No. 7 had every ounce of momentum, but the underdog has never been one to go away quietly. Ferrero did nothing of the sort; instead, the 31-year-old Spaniard only got better as the match progressed.
Ferrero had also staged a five-set comeback win over Pablo Andujar in round one, so he was not about to shy away from the situation. In fact, the world No. 105 did not drop serve a single time in sets four and five. Monfils, on the other hand, looked lifeless in the fifth and although he held his last three service games, he could not get back an immediate break.

Ferrero is a delightful player to watch when he's on and without physical pain, I'm so so happy for him :)

The best match of the tournament thus far. I love watching JCF when he is on song. Unfortunately for him, his injuries have caused many disruptions in his career.
I read an article which talked about his feelings on being dumped to the backseat by the Spanish Tennis federation when Nadal arrived on the scene. To say he was hurt is putting it mildly. It's one of the reasons he refused to pitch and play Davis Cup a couple of times.

Upset indeed! As soon as I saw the scoreline after the first 3 sets I knew it was gonna go the distance, the match highlights were incredible. Itäs a shame for Monfils, but brilliant for JCF.
