Andy Murray gets past John Isner in four sets during quarterfinal action at the U.S. Open on Friday. Murray awaits either Rafael Nadal or Andy Roddick.
Andy Murray booked a spot in his fourth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal on Friday afternoon, outlasting John Isner 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) in the U.S. Open quarters. Murray turned in a stellar performance and struck 47 winners against only 20 unforced errors to advance after three hours and 24 minutes of spirited play.
A tight first set saw both players earn a single break chance, and the difference was Murray being able to capitalize on his opportunity. The decisive break came at 5-5, when Isner followed up a double-fault with an errant forehand. Murray promptly served out the opening frame of play with little trouble, converting his first set point.
Isner, who got past Gilles Simon in four tight sets on Thursday, seemed to be headed for a quick exit when he donated serve to open the second. With momentum in hand, Murray never came close to giving the break back. The world No. 4 dropped a mere four points in five service games and made only three unforced errors in the entire set.
Never one to go away without a fight, Isner turned the tide in set three. The 6'9'' American raised his level and aggression, paving the way to his first break of the day for a 2-0 advantage. Murray had one chance to get back on serve at 1-3, but Isner erased it and served things out the rest of the way.
That set the stage for a dramatic fourth. Murray fired 18 winners at the expense of only four mistakes throughout the set, but Isner still managed to force a tiebreaker. The world No. 22 even had a golden opportunity up 15-40 with his opponent serving at 4-4. Murray, though, erased both break points and soon took complete control in the 'breaker. A double-fault and a shanked volley by Isner ended his upset chances, and a big first serve by Murray at 6-2 wrapped up the proceedings.
The fourth-seeded Scot cracked 14 aces and double-faulted twice en route to a showdown with either Rafael Nadal or Andy Roddick.
