Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through to the final eight at the US Open, after rallying to oust Mardy Fish in five sets. The Frenchman will face either five-time champion Roger Federer or Juan Monaco for a place in the semifinal.
Eleventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the quarterfinal, following his come-from-behind victory over 8th seed Mardy Fish. The 26-year-old trailed by two-sets-to-one, before closing the contest in five sets, 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Fish was treated for a right leg problem just before the fifth set. Tsonga broke immediately, having struck a well-time forehand pass. A second break came at 4-1 for the Frenchman, once the American made a volley error.
Tsonga missed a couple of match points, then sealed the victory with an overhead smash. He completed the fourth-round effort with 51 winners, 12 aces and four service breaks.
He is slated to meet World No. 3 Roger Federer or Juan Monaco in the quarterfinal.
