Andy Murray books a spot in the U.S. Open quarterfinals by rolling over Donald Young on Thursday. Murray awaits either Gilles Simon or John Isner.
Rain and more rain made Andy Murray wait to get some revenge on Donald Young. When he finally took the court, Murray wasted no time doing just that.
The world No. 4 crushed Young 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, avenging a surprise loss from earlier this season in Indian Wells. Murray needed just one hour and 58 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash against either Gilles Simon or John Isner.
Young led 2-1 after a brief session prior to Wednesday's downpours, but it was a much different story when they came back out one day later. In fact, the American did not win a single game the entire rest of the way in set one.
Unforced errors flowed off the Young racket from start to finish and he never could get on track in this one. The underdog managed to get breaks back in each of the final two sets, but he never looked comfortable on serve. Murray finished with eight service breaks out of 11 chances while playing a smart match and letting his opponent self-destruct.
The Scot wrapped up his effort with 15 winners and 17 unforced errors. Young, playing in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, hit 19 winners but made a whopping 53 mistakes.
