  • Ferrer, Roddick comfortably advance to the third round

    9/3/11 4:59 PM | Cheryl Murray
No. 5 seed David Ferrer and No. 21 Andy Roddick earned third round berths with straight set victories over a pair of Americans.

    David Ferrer (5) def. James Blake 6-4, 6-3, 6-4

World No. 63 James Blake had a number of bright moments of play in his second round match against Spaniard David Ferrer. The American showed flashes of the top 10 player he once was, but Ferrer proved too solid for Blake in the end.

Ferrer was solid, as he usually is, on the return. The world No. 5 broke Blake 5 times in the three sets, so particular damage to Blake off the backhand side. The win sends Ferrer into the third round against Florian Mayer.

    Andy Roddick (21) def. Jack Sock 6-3, 6-3, 6-4

This was a match of the veteran against the new-comer. Long-time top ten player Andy Roddick took on the American teenager Jack Sock.

Sock put in a good show against Roddick, but the teen permitted Roddick to dictate play from the back of the court and ultimately donated too many unforced errors to the Roddick cause. Sock finished the match dropping all 5 of the break points against him. He only secured a single service break of Roddick’s serve.

Roddick played clean tennis, with 27 winners and just 13 unforced errors. The veteran will take on Frenchman Julien Benneteau in the third round.

About time the Rod showed some form of dominance! But he won't get very far if we plays the same brand of "pushing" tennis. When last did we see him give a good ol' thumping to the ball?
