9/2/08 4:13 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Murray of Scotland attempted to reach his second consecutive Grand Slam quarter final as he took on Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka.
Murray continued his impressive summer hard court form on Monday night. Wawrinka is the world number ten and has some good hard court results of his own in 2008. He reached the final in Doha (where he lost to Murray) in January and the quarter finals in Indian Wells. Despite this resume, he was no match for the young Scot.
The Scot came out of the blocks at full speed. He broke Wawrinka’s serve in the first game of the match. Wawrinka was able to get to deuce on Murray’s first serve, but clutch serving from the Scotsman secured the hold. The rest of the first set was Murray at his hard court best. He returned well and jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Wawrinka finally managed to win his only game of the set.
Murray continued to keep the pressure on Wawrinka for the rest of the match. The Scot crushed 38 winners to just 15 unforced errors and Wawrinka seemed to play the entire match off his back foot. Murray’s return was especially brilliant. He won almost half the points on Wawrinka’s serve (48%). A break of serve in the second set and two more in the third sealed the win. Next up for Murray is Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.
This was a magnificent display from Murray. He has firmly established himself as a contender for the title.
Wawrinka could not keep up at all. What could have been a marquee match ended as a complete blowout and a total disappointment to the live spectators.
