Roger Federer fought through the slightly dicy conditions and a fiesty Novak Djokovic to reach yet another US Open final.
This match was a rematch of last year's US Open final where Federer took out Djokovic in 3 tight sets. They had to start at 11 AM due to the possible rainy forecast later in the day. In this one, Federer came out firing. His forehand looked like it did back in 2006 and he overpowered Djokovic in the first set, taking it 6-3.
By the second set, Djokovic had gotten himself together and began to really play. That, combined with Roger starting to cool off allowed Djokovic to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Roger would not go quietly however, as he broke back and leveled it at 4-4. Djokovic got himself out of trouble when he served at 4 all 0-30 and was able to hold.
Roger then served at 5-6, 0-40. He was able to save the first two break points but couldn't do it at 30-40. He threw down a big serve out wide which Djokovic returned cross court. Fed moved in to smack a forehand winner down the line but missed by quite a margin, allowing Djokovic to take the second set. The wind began to pick up at the end of the second and rain appeared imminent. Federer had only 3 errors in the first set while 11 in the second.
The third set was average play from both as they exchanged service holds with break points here and there. Federer snatched a break at 5-5 and played possibly the shot of the tournament in the first point of his 6-5 service game. He was 8 feet behind the baseline with Djokovic at the net and Roger hit a jumping running overhead lob that curved over Djokovic's head and landed inside the baseline. Roger takes the 3rd set 7-5.
In the fourth, Djokovic looked both tired and distraught. His fire and will to win seemed to be gone. Djokovic gets broken in the 2 all game and never wins another game. Federer then cranks it up especially on serve and throws down some bombs to hold for 4-2. Federer then easily breaks Djokovic for 5-2 and serves out the match for 6-2. Djokovic sped up his play in the fourth, a departure from his usual slow play. This could have been due to fatigue, impatience, or a variey of things.
Federer played solid but not amazing aside from the first set. He served like Sampras, however, throwing down 20 aces. He's now won 33 matches in a row at the US Open and will go for his 5th straight title on Sunday.
When asked after the match who he prefers to play in the final, he responded: “Who do I prefer? I prefer the trophy!” Before saying he wants Rafa.
Federer says he pushing himself hard in hopes of winning the Open again.
Good stuff from Federer to make his 5th straight US Open final.
Djokovic looked out of it and spent by the fourth.
