9/9/08 4:57 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roger Federer dazzled the early-evening US Open crowd on Monday with play that was reminiscent of the Federer of last year.
Andy Murray played catch-up for the entire final. Federer shot out of the starting blocks with a break of Murray's serve. From early in the match, Federer looked the fresher of the two men. The world number two from Switzerland got help from the remnants of Hurricane Hanna. Murray had been forced to finish his semifinal match against Rafael Nadal on Sunday afternoon, and had to come out less than 24 hours later to take on Federer.
Federer bore little resemblance to the player who struggled on hard courts all year. Instead, he treated Murray to blistering forehands that had the Scot looking flat-footed. The Swiss clinched the first set with a double break of serve and quickly jumped out to a lead with an early break in the second. Murray showed some signs of life and managed to break back, but it just delayed the inevitable for the Scotsman.
The second set would perhaps have had a different outcome altogether but for a poor line call. At 2-2, Murray had another three chances to break Federer’s serve. At 15-40, a Federer forehand sailed clearly long, but the call was missed by a linesman. Federer went on to hold and from that moment forward in the second Federer’s play was exquisite.
Murray looked completely out of steam and belief in the third set. Federer stormed through the set for 5-0 before Murray held to avoid the embarrassing bagel. All appearances indicated that Federer would serve out the match, but Murray surprised by breaking the his opponent's serve. Once again, it merely delayed Federer's victory. Murray could not hold onto his own serve after the break and Federer won his first Grand Slam title of the year on his second championship point.
The win gives Federer his thirteenth Grand Slam title, and puts him within one Slam title of the record of fourteen held by Pete Sampras.
It was like having the old Federer back again. He was brilliant as he has not been this year.
Murray was flat and simply outplayed from all areas of the court.

I can't stand that person, he's so arrogant, he'd never be the number one again.
gordana , 9/9/08 3:25 PM
Novak will never be number one or number two, for that matter. Peace, Gordana.
Nadi , 9/9/08 4:48 PM

FedEx delivers again!
Gameplay , 9/9/08 6:42 PM
nadi & janhavi both of you are the same as your arrogant one, it's forgiven to you, cause you don't know what are you talking about, that's your poor wish for Federer to be number one, never again, Nadal is the best, after him naturally Novak, but be ready, Novak will be the first one next year, so we Serbs are like that, simply, we have to be the best, what we can do...
gordana , 9/10/08 10:07 AM
i understand and respect your love for novak but you cannot call someone anything you feel like without knowing them..you provoke people to launch personal attacks...if you dont like federer thts your problem..wht you are saying about him though is a load of crap..but if you dont want to accpet that i dont care...your opinion does not affect his greatness at all..
janhavi , 9/10/08 4:59 PM
janhavi, as far as I understood, you know all the players, who do you think you are, you're wright, I don't like Federer, cause he does not like Novak at all and he showed that many times, he's arrogant and that's the fact, as a high ranking tennis player, he is not supposed to express his hate, malice, and bad attitude, he's to control himself, that makes me crazy, I never said Federer is not very good player, but he's not anymore, there are too many good players, but he's hungry for power, trying to stay at the scene for 20 years more, I'm sorry, mission impossible, he's so selfish, like all of you commenting our Novak all the time in a bad contest, I'm afraid, I can't let you insulting him, he's nice guy, trying to play his best tennis, in spite of fact, he's very young, you don't have to love him, but respect him for sure. Novak forever for all Serbs wherever they are.
gordana , 9/11/08 3:01 PM
gordana, let me see if I understood this correctly. You can't let people insult Djokovic but you are free to call people fat and ugly in a public forum? You're asking other people to respect Novak, yet you show none whatsoever yourself?
EinarBerg , 9/11/08 3:51 PM
gordana read the posts!!! i have never said anything about novak..on the contrary ive been trying to defend him for i know he's not a bad guy..none of thses guys are bad! that's why they're the top guys! & lets say tht roger does not like novak..when did he ever show it??? wht bad attitude ?? he's the most beloved champion in tennis right now..and a lot of tht goes to the way he carries himself! even his fellow players say tht about him! please...get grip ...and dont acuse me..i have not said anything bad about him..
