Wayne Odesnik put up a valiant effort and could have won this match. MGP simply refused to lose.
As the match opened up, both players were hitting the ball well. Neither player seemed to get an edge upon the other until Odesnik was able to break MGP on his first chance. That was all that was needed as Odesnik cruised to the set. The first set was very high quality from both.
The second set panned out like the first one. Odesnik took a break lead and both players cruised on serve until Wayne served for it at 5-4. This was the point when MGP turned the match around. He broke the American back, saving 2 match points, and won the next 3 games to take the 7-5 set.
In the third, Odesnik looked a bit down while MGP was firing up. The Spaniard used some great variety of shot to work Odesnik over and over to win his points. He served fantastic, losing just 3 points on his serve that set. Odesnik, on the other hand, seemed to struggle with each service game. A single break was all MGP needed to stick the nail in Odesnik's coffin so to speak.
Marcel Grannollers-Pujol will now contest his first ever ATP final against James Blake.
Great fight from Grannollers-Pujol to get back into the match and make his first ATP final.
A bit of a letdown for Odesnik as he had the match in his hands and was so close to tasting victory and also his first ATP final.
