10/5/11 7:51 PM | Cheryl Murray
No. 2 seed Andy Murray came back from a break down in the third set to cap a victory over popular Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.
Marcos Baghdatis made life difficult for Andy Murray in the first round of the Japan Open. The Scot won the first set, but only just barely after trading breaks of serve with Baghdatis and just edging the Cypriot out in the tiebreaker.
Murray’s return game failed him slightly in the second set. Baghdatis wasn’t pressed hard enough on serve. He faced a pair of break points, but he fought both off. Murray, who served at 62 percent for the set, was broken twice to give Baghdatis the middle frame.
The Scot got in trouble early in the third set. Baghdatis looked on his way to a first round upset of the No. 2 seed, but Murray found his way back in the match with a break of the Cypriot’s serve. Baghdatis seemed to run out of steam after surrendering his break lead; he gave up another break and Murray took the win.
Murray, who started a day later than most of the rest of the draw, will play his second-round match on Thursday against Alex Bogomolov, Jr.
